Alex Pretti, 37, was shot and killed on Jan. 24 in Minneapolis -- the second shooting of a U.S. citizen last month by federal agents in the city.

The shooting of Pretti, an ICU nurse, ratcheted up tensions, as protesters clashed in the streets with law enforcement in the aftermath of the shooting.

The incident followed the fatal shooting of Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother, on Jan. 7.

Trump administration seeking expedited removal of 5-year-old and family, Rep. Castro says

Texas Rep. Joaquin Castro said Friday that the Trump administration has filed for the expedited deportation of 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his family, days after a federal judge ordered their release from immigration detention.

The 5-year-old and his father, Adrian Conejo Arias, were detained by federal agents last week and sent to a Texas detention facility, before they returned to Minneapolis on Sunday after a judgeorderedthe government to release them.

They had a pending asylum case but no order of deportation directing that they be removed from the United States, ABC News previously reported.

An asylum hearing for the family that was originally scheduled for later this month was moved up to Friday. In a statement to ABC News, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin characterized the hearing as a regular removal proceeding.

"They are not in expedited removal," McLaughlin said. "This is standard procedure and there is nothing retaliatory about enforcing the nation's immigration laws."

A school official told ABC News that the immigration judge overseeing Friday's hearing granted Liam Conejo Ramos and his family a continuance -- i.e., a formal postponement of the case to a later date.

"Our concern remains centered on Liam and all children who deserve stability, safety and the opportunity to be in school without fear," said Columbia Heights Public SchoolsSuperintendent Zena Stenvik. "We will continue to advocate for outcomes that prioritize children."

"He was traumatized in Dilley, but now the Trump administration is trying to take him away again," Rep. Castro said in a post on X, referring to the Dilley detention center in Texas. "The Department of Justice has filed for expedited deportation, which would take him away again."

Gov. Walz warns that federal agent surge is damaging state's economy

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz took to social media again Thursday night calling the federal government to end Operation Metro Surge.

He linked to a local news piece that interviewed Minneapolis Director of Community Planning and Economic Development Erik Hansen who said the city is losing up to $20 million every week since the surge began.

"Operation Metro Surge is hurting small business and doing long-term damage to Minnesota's economy. It's time for this campaign of retribution to end," Walz said.

Renee Good, Alex Pretti killings 'should have not happened': Trump

President Donald Trump said he was "not happy" with the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by federal agents in Minneapolis during an exclusive sit-down interview with NBC News on Wednesday.

"I'm not happy with the two incidents," he said. "He was not an angel and she was not an angel. You know, you look at some tapes from back, but still, I'm not happy with what happened there. Nobody could be happy and ICE wasn't happy either."

Though Trump said Good and Pretti are not "angels," he said this does not justify what happened to them.

"No, it should have not happened. It was very sad to me, a very sad incident. I think they were both sad," Trump said.

"And you know who feels worse about it than anybody? The people of ICE," he added.

An ICE officer shot and killed Good while she was in her vehicle on Jan. 7. Pretti was killed in a shooting involving federal agents later that month. A Border Patrol agent and a Customs and Border Protection officer both discharged their weapons during the shooting, according to a DHS notification to Congress.

11-year-old Minnesota girl released from immigration custody

An 11-year-old student from the same school district as Liam Conejo Ramos was been released from immigration custody in Texas on Wednesday.

Elizabeth Zuna Caisaguano, a 4th grader at Highland Elementary, was the first student in the district to be taken into custody when she and her mother were detained by ICE on their way to school last month, according to Columbia Heights Public Schools.

The school district confirmed that both mother and daughter are currently traveling back home to Minnesota.

"We are filled with joy for the family, knowing Elizabeth's father will soon be reunited with his daughter and wife," a school district spokesperson said in a statement.

Caisaguano's release comes just days after five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos-who was also detained last month-was released from the same facility in Dilley, Texas.

"We have been very concerned about her and our other students and families being held in detention centers," the spokesperson said. "We seek the full release of all children and parents from detention centers across our country."
