Bay Area grocer gives $100 shopping spree to SNAP beneficiaries

As the government shutdown reaches day 40, Bay Area businesses are stepping up to help struggling families who are cut off from SNAP food benefits. A free grocery shopping spree brought a huge response from members of the South Bay community.

Families are doing their Sunday grocery shopping, grabbing everything they need.

It's something Sabrina Phillips hasn't been able to do since her SNAP benefits were frozen.

"I got a little bit of everything, poultry, beef eggs, things that are so expensive," Phillips said.

Arteagas Food Center in East San Jose is offered a free one day shopping spree to the community, now feeling the pinch from the government shutdown.

"This is our way to give back so they have something to eat during this time," said Alfredo Lopez.

Supreme Court justice temporarily pauses order requiring Trump administration to fully fund SNAP

A Supreme Court justice has temporarily paused a lower court's ruling requiring the Trump administration to fully fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for the month of November by the end of the day Friday.

In an order late Friday night, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson said the pause will remain in effect until the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issues a judgment on the matter. Jackson's order did not refer the matter to the full court.

Earlier Friday, the Court of Appeals denied a request by the Trump administration for an administrative stay pausing the order to fully fund SNAP. The Trump administration responded by asking the Supreme Court to intervene.

Californians starting to see SNAP benefits reinstated, SF residents also get extra food aid

The fight over SNAP benefits continues. Friday afternoon, a federal appeals panel ordered the White House to fully fund payments for the month of November.

But the Trump Administration has now asked the Supreme Court to intervene.

The USDA is already sending out that money to people in at least nine states, including California.

Some Bay Area residents have already received their full SNAP payments. It comes in addition to money provided by the City of San Francisco through a public-private partnership with the Crankstart Foundation.

Trump admin asks Supreme Court to halt order providing full SNAP payments for November

A federal appeals court on Friday denied the Trump administration's request to lift a lower court's order that it fully fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for the month of November.

The Justice Department responded by asking the Supreme Court to intervene by issuing an emergency stay.

The unanimous decision, from a panel of three judges on the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, came as least nine states had already begun issuing SNAP benefits under the direction of the federal agency that operates SNAP, even as the Trump administration was fighting a judge's ruling ordering those benefits to be paid.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which operates SNAP, told states Friday afternoon that it was working toward paying full November SNAP benefits.
