SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- One person was injured and a cat died after a 2-alarm fire burned three homes in the Outer Sunset district of San Francisco, fire officials say.

The San Francisco Fire Department says the fire started around 6 a.m. at a house on 47th Avenue between Irving and Judah. The fire then spread to the two adjacent houses.

When crews got there, the home was fully engulfed and flames were shooting through the roof.

Firefighters rescued three adults. One of those people was initially said to be in critical condition, but was later downgraded. Fire officials say that person jumped from a window into a backyard.

A cat was also rescued but succumbed to its injures after being treated by paramedics.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

SFFD says homes being so close to each other make for tough challenges when fighting many of these house fires in the city.

"These zero lot lines are what make us work very aggressive to stop this fire from spreading," Samuel Menchaca with SFFD said. "This fire could have been much more devastating."

While there's never a good time for a house fire, overnight ones can be especially dangerous.

SFFD says it's always best to sleep with your door closed, check smoke detectors every six months, follow safety tips with lithium ion batteries and don't use too many surge protectors or extension cords.
