10-year-old accused of stabbing student at South Bay school: officials

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- A 10-year-old boy was detained after he allegedly stabbed a 7-year-old girl with a kitchen knife at an elementary school in Mountain View this week, police said Thursday.

The victim suffered three wounds to the shoulder after she was stabbed about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the play area of Benjamin Bubb Elementary School, Mountain View police said.

The girl had been participating in an after-school program at the school, located at 525 Hans Ave.

The campus was placed on lockdown and crews from the Mountain View Fire Department treated the child at the scene before releasing her to a parent.

The suspect left before police arrived, but officers found residential video that helped identify him. A Los Altos Police Department K-9 unit helped track the boy from the school to his home.

Officers coordinated with a guardian and detained the suspect without incident. Custody was transferred to clinicians from Pacific Clinics, Santa Clara County's juvenile mental health services provider.

Authorities didn't release information on what led up to the stabbing. Police said the suspect doesn't attend Bubb Elementary School and wasn't enrolled in the after-school program.
