17-year-old girl found dead on side of Antioch road, police say

ANTIOCH, Calif. (KGO) -- The Antioch Police Department is investigating a suspicious death after a 17-year-old girl was found dead on the side of the road Friday morning.

Authorities say the teen's body was found near the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds in the area of L Street between West 18th and West 10th streets.

The Mercury was the first to report this story and spoke to Antioch police Lt. Bill Whitaker, who said officers responded to the scene around 3:30 a.m. and tried to revive the girl.

"Seventeen-year-olds don't die," Whitaker said. "That's the main thing that makes it suspicious."

According to Whitaker, the girl was not registered in the Antioch School District system, and officers did not find evidence of narcotics use.

He says the girl had injuries that were "inconsistent with an accidental fall," but that did not necessarily indicate a homicide.
