ANTIOCH, Calif. (KGO) -- Police say the 17-year-old girl found dead on the side of an Antioch road was the victim of a hit-and-run.
The girl's body was found early Friday morning, not far from Antioch High School. The area is near the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds in the area of L Street between West 18th and West 10th streets.
Police are now searching for the driver who hit her.
Earlier, the Antioch Police Department had called the death suspicious.
The Mercury was the first to report this story and spoke to Antioch police Lt. Bill Whitaker, who said officers responded to the scene around 3:30 a.m. and tried to revive the girl.
"Seventeen-year-olds don't die," Whitaker said. "That's the main thing that makes it suspicious."
According to Whitaker, the girl was not registered in the Antioch School District system, and officers did not find evidence of narcotics use.
