OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- Speed cameras are coming to Oakland starting next month, but you'll have several more months before you have to worry about tickets.

The city is installing 18 cameras across Oakland, with the goal of them all being turned on by mid-January.

Intersections were picked based on crash history and speeding data.

San Francisco's speed cameras have led to tens of thousands of citations since they turned on earlier this year.

The city says drivers are slowing down - finding a 72% drop in speeding across 15 intersections.

Oakland hopes for the same outcome.

Once the cameras turn on, they will give out warnings for 60 days before the citations start.
