SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Two San Francisco Safeways are set to be transformed into large housing complexes that will sit above redeveloped grocery stores.
Both the Bernal Heights and Ocean Beach Safeway stores will close temporarily when the projects begin.
Per proposed plans, a newer, bigger Safeway store would become part of a six-story building complex.
It would include 370 new apartments at market rate prices and a below ground garage for residents and shoppers.
There's no timeline yet for the closure and construction.

A very similar plan was pitched by the same developer for the Outer Richmond Safeway near Ocean Beach.
It would bring an eight-story complex to the store, and add 526 new homes to the neighborhood.
The company says the store will be even larger once it reopens, and that all employees will be reassigned to other nearby stores while it is closed for construction.
