Levi's Stadium $200M makeover includes NFL's largest 4K display

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KGO) -- Hundreds of fans watched from the stands at Levi's Stadium Thursday night as the 49ers unveiled the largest 4K display in the NFL, amongst other upgrades.

The league says the display will make highlights, replays, and touchdowns bigger and brighter.

49ers fan Oona Smith felt the excitement.

"Oh, I am ready, I am ready, if I could suit up I would run right down there on the field," Smith said.

In one year, soccer fans from all over the world will be in the Bay Area for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as Levi's Stadium prepares to host six matches.

Right before the reveal, General Manager John Lynch said having this offers a critical advantage at home.

"There needs to be something that other teams know that when they come in here it's going to be hard to hear, it's going to be hard to think, it's going to be hard to function. And I've been in places like that," Lynch said.

The display is not the only upgrade coming to Levi's. The newly remodeled team store has self-service checkout.

The RFID system doesn't scan barcodes, but instead reads data wirelessly from tags.

The stadium got even more high-tech with the largest control room on the West Coast.

ABC7 News got a look at all the screens capturing the action in 4K quality.

Fourty-nine monitors in the control room are taking in 39 cameras.

It took two years to plan with a focus on putting the best foot forward for next year's Super Bowl and FIFA World Cup matches.

ABC7 spoke with Laura Johnson, Senior Director of Game Presentation & Live Events.

"We did a lot of research starting right after Super Bowl 57 of what goes into that Super Bowl production - what do you need right to put this room together? And that's what we did we built it for world class events like Super Bowl and FIFA," Johnson said.

In the last decade, $300 million = have gone into Levi's Stadium with $200 million this summer.

49ers 'super fan' Mark Castanon was enjoying the energy ahead of preseason.

"It's like spring all over again you get that feeling in your gut you get excited," Castanon said. "You're starting to think more football you're telling your family and your children and your wife hey- I'm not going to be around as much anymore. So yeah I'm loving it!"

Kickoff for the 49ers is this Saturday at Levi's Stadium for their preseason game.
