'Abbott Elementary' brings cast, crew to Philadelphia to film Season 5

PHILADELPHIA -- Wednesday, October 1 is the premiere of Season 5 of "Abbott Elementary."

The hit ABC show about a West Philadelphia elementary school is the brainchild of local creator and star Quinta Brunson.

This season, the cast and crew filmed scenes at Citizen Bank Park in South Philadelphia, and also did something pretty unprecedented. The stars were embedded in the stands and filmed during an actual Phillies game.

"Getting to bring my crew and everything to my home and people being so excited that we're here filming in the city is incredible," Brunson says. "Just now on set, one of the crew members thanked us for coming to Philly. It's our honor."

'Abbott Elementary' star William Stanford Davis, who plays beloved janitor Mr. Johnson, tours some of the most famous sites - and tastes - of Philadelphia.

For "Abbott Elementary," getting to Season 5 is a TV milestone.

"It really is," says Tyler James Williams, who plays teacher Gregory Eddie. "Not a lot of shows make it to five, so especially in this landscape, in this current time, it's good that we're able to do it, and also do it at this level."

"I'm proud that I also get to make something that represents Philly in a positive light, helping people understand what makes this city so charming and great," adds Brunson.

So what can we expect for Season 5?

"There's a lot of unexpected things happening this season," says Williams. "It'll keep everybody on their toes in a way that they they have not been before."

"There'll be some huge, overall, massive changes for our school," adds Brunson. "I think that's that's all I can say."

"Abbott Elementary" Season 5 kicks off on October 1st at 8:30 p.m. on ABC.
