LOS ANGELES -- The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences celebrated 15 scientific and technical achievements last night at its annual Scientific and Technical Awards ceremony at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.

Hosted by Sofia Carson, the event honored 27 individual recipients whose inventions have fundamentally changed the way movies are made.

From lead-free pyrotechnics that keep sets safer to software that brings stop-motion animation to life, the night focused on the movie magic that happens behind the camera.

"The Academy is honored to announce this year's Scientific and Technical Awards recipients, whose extraordinary achievements continue to shape the art and craft of filmmaking," Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor said in a joint statement.

Among the night's top honors, Jamie Caliri and Dyami Caliri received the Scientific and Engineering Award for Dragonframe, the software that has transformed modern stop-motion animation.

Other awards recognized breakthroughs in visual effects from Wt FX and Industrial Light & Magic, as well as Paul Debevec's work in lighting techniques.

While many Academy Awards recognize excellence in a given year, the Scientific and Technical Awards honor achievements with a proven record of delivering lasting value to the industry.
