Bald eagle pair and their eaglets' nesting spot attracting visitors in East Bay

PIEDMONT, Calif. (KGO) -- A pair of bald eagles and their two eaglets are getting cozy in the East Bay. Bird watchers with binoculars are drawn to their nesting spot on Monte and Moraga avenues in Piedmont.

The young ones are in the fledgling stage, with their head feathers still dark.

They're just starting to explore outside the nest.

Bird expert Whitney Grover tells us they are the first bald eagle chicks in the Oakland area in recent history.

"They sort of situated themselves in a perfect place to be admired there," said Whitney Grover, director of conservation for Golden Gate Bird Alliance. "Birds are such an important part of the ecosystem and they're sharing their neighborhoods with us. So it's a good reminder that we're all connected, we're connected to the nature even in our cities."

Grover says since the ban of the pesticide DDT and other conservation efforts -- decades later -- bald eagles are finally making a comeback in California.
