Woman fatally struck by BART train in West Oakland: officials

OAKLAND, Calif. -- A woman died after being hit by a BART train at the West Oakland station Friday afternoon, a spokesperson for the transit agency said.

The collision occurred at about 2 p.m. and has prompted major delays for trains on the Friday afternoon commute. The West Oakland station resumed service just after 5 p.m.

Transbay service still operated during the closure because trains went through the station on the opposite tracks, BART spokesperson Chris Filippi said.

Filippi said there is no indication of foul play in the woman's death.

BART temporarily suspended Green Line and Red Line service to help mitigate the flow of trains, he said.

Weary train commuters also encountered delays further east on the system because of an equipment problem on the trackway at the Orinda station. Trains had to use the single opposite track in both directions through the area until the problem was resolved.
