Bay Area driver facing 2nd degree murder in hit and run in Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. (KGO) -- A Bay Area driver made his first court appearance in connection with a deadly hit-and-run in Tucson, Arizona.

He is facing second-degree murder and felony hit-and-run charges.

The crash happened on October 30 when three University of Arizona students were struck as they were walking near campus, according to police.

Friends are mourning the loss of one of the victims. She has been identified as Sophia Troetel.

Troetel was the general manager of the student-run campus radio station, KAMP.

"She really gave me the sense of community," said Lawrence Zhang, a friend. "When I joined KAMP, she helped me to find friends and a place to stay connected."

The suspect eventually turned himself in to the police.
