Heavy rainfall causes flooding, backups on Bay Area roadways

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- The rain was coming down too fast at times for some South Bay roads to handle on Monday.

Firefighters and tow trucks were pulling vehicles out of flooded roads in several parts of the city.

Multiple cars got stuck on the 880 on-ramp from Airport Boulevard Monday night - many of them Ubers and Lyfts leaving the airport.

A BMW could be seen sitting under several feet of water along one San Jose street. It was certainly not the only vehicle stuck though. Several were under water after Hamilton Way and Kesling Avenue flooded during afternoon storms.

That hard downpour hit most of the Bay Area including San Francisco, Oakland, and Napa County, where in Calistoga the concern was hilltops that burned in the recent Pickett Fire, but ones you couldn't even see Monday due to the mist and clouds after the rain.

"It came down really hard and got really windy for a while," said Tom Muscarella who was visiting Calistoga when we spoke with him.

"The river runs right through the town and we had heard there would be debris floating down with big rocks and things and nothing like that, must have been somewhere else," said Adele Layton of Calistoga.

"It was pouring, it was sprinkling, and then all of a sudden it was sprinkling and pouring so we just had no idea what to do when," said Andy Newell visiting the area from Colorado.

We spoke with Calistoga Mayor Donald Williams who said despite that hard downpour they had Monday, the city is in good shape, and he wasn't aware of any problems with the burn scars.

"It was raining really hard earlier, now it's not raining that much. I did get rained on a little bit but not that much because I had my rain jacket," said six-year-old Ayan Hall.

The youngster came prepared, even with some advice for others.

"So you may want to stay inside of places because usually the rain doesn't break inside places," Ayan said.

But in the North Bay, the chatter wasn't just about rain, it was also about the brisk temperatures that dropped into the low 50s Monday night.

"We're here celebrating our anniversary and we weren't expecting it to be this cold but it's all good ya know," said Muscarella.

Not even the weather could mess with those two celebrating 41 years together, but certainly a different feel there in Calistoga compared to the crews pulling cars out of the water in the South Bay.
