SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Bike MS: Waves to Wine, a cycling fundraiser that began more than 40 years ago, is returning next month with a goal of raising at least $1.1 million for multiple sclerosis research.

The event, which features five different rides from the coast through wine country, supports research into multiple sclerosis, a progressive neurologic disorder with no cure. Organizers say participants will ride through and around Petaluma and Napa while raising money for the cause.

Liz Biro spoke with Michael Kelly, a partner at Walkup, Melodia, Kelly & Schoenberger, about the firm's support of the event.

"This event is a national fundraiser. The goal here is to raise at least $1.1 million for MS research. It is a progressive neurologic disorder. There is no cure, but that should not stop anybody from donating and helping us," Kelly said.

Walkup, Melodia, Kelly & Schoenberger is serving as a sponsor of the fundraiser. Kelly said the firm's work with people facing neurologic conditions aligns with the organization's mission.

"The firm is a firm that does a lot of personal injury work. We see a lot people with neurologic disorders and our work isn't just to represent them but is trying to optimize their lives, whether that's to assist with disability assistance, with medications, with drug research," Kelly said.

Organizers said they hope the fundraiser will support research that benefits Bay Area residents while also raising awareness and encouraging financial support and volunteer participation nationwide.

According to the organization, $366,527 has been raised so far toward a goal of $1.15 million.

Kelly said community service is central to the firm's values.

"That all of us have a responsibility to take care of our neighbors, that yes, the law provides us with an avenue to recover money, but oftentimes just helping. We have really a terrific group of both lawyers and team members who are about making life better for the folks we represent and the people who live next door," Kelly said.

Bike MS: Waves to Wine is scheduled for the weekend of Sept. 19-20, 2026. Walkup, Melodia, Kelly & Schoenberger is a gold sponsor of the event.
