'Chain reaction' of events lead to deadly Burlingame crash that killed 4-year-old boy, police say

BURLINGAME, Calif. (KGO) -- A terrible crash took the life of a 4-year-old boy and injured a 6-year-old girl Friday night in Burlingame. Police say the two kids were struck on the sidewalk by a car that jumped the curb and crashed into a restaurant.

"My heart goes out to the family, and my heart goes out to the driver. Just a horrific situation," said Natalie Cedeao.

Bouquets of flowers and a stuffed toy turtle were being left outside the Poke Bar restaurant in downtown Burlingame, where the unthinkable happened Friday night.

"I heard people screaming, yelling for help. I could see people running to help people in the crash," said Dexter Metcalfe.

Metcalfe lives next door. He and his family ran to help. Police say the driver of a Mazda SUV jumped the curb, striking two little kids on the sidewalk before crashing into the restaurant.

"The 6-year-old was transported to a nearby hospital. The 4-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene," said Lieutenant David Perna from Burlingame Police Department.

"I felt really, really bad," Metcalfe said.

Police say a 19-year-old woman from San Mateo was behind the wheel. Authorities say it appears drugs and alcohol were not a factor here.

"It appears the vehicle was leaving the parking lot and collided with a bicyclist, creating a chain reaction hitting the curb, striking two juveniles, crashing into the restaurant," Perna said.

The driver was not arrested.

"I don't know the involvement of the e-bike, but they were going down the avenue like crazy last night," said Jordana Peil.

"This is the third pedestrian to die in Burlingame in the past year," said Mike Swire.

Pedestrian advocate Mike Swire is asking leaders in Burlingame and beyond for more protections for pedestrians.

"The streets of San Mateo County are not safe. People need to walk and shop without fear of taking their lives into their hands," Swire said.

Police say the 6-year-old girl is getting care at Stanford Medical Center with non-life threatening injures.

"The whole thing is so sad for the family and the 19-year-old. Her life is forever changed," Peil said.
