

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Two people in their 70s were severely injured in a suspected hit-and-run at a Berkeley intersection Wednesday night, according to police.
Around 9 p.m., officers were alerted to a report that two pedestrians were struck by a vehicle at the intersection of University Avenue and Eighth Street. When they arrived, the officers found a 78-year-old man and a 75-year-old woman with serious injuries.
The driver who struck the pedestrians was nowhere to be found, the Berkeley Police Department said.

Berkeley Fire Department crews sent both victims to a hospital.
"Due to the severity of the collision, the Department's Fatal Accident Investigation Team is conducting the investigation. Preliminary information indicates that the man and woman were crossing University Avenue in the eastern crosswalk when they were struck by a dark-colored sedan traveling eastbound on University Avenue," police said.
