Cyclist dies after being stuck by vehicle in Berkeley, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. -- A bicyclist in his 60's was killed Saturday afternoon on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley near the University of California, police said.

Officers responded about 2:52 p.m. to the intersection of Telegraph Avenue and Haste Street, where the southbound cyclist was struck by a pickup truck going north, police said.

The location is near Cleary Hall student dormitory, Rochdale Village student housing cooperative and Martinez Commons undergraduate residence apartments.

The cyclist was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The pickup driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said.

Telegraph Avenue, between Haste Street and Dwight Way, and Haste Street, between Bowditch Avenue and Dana Street, were temporarily closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
