Deputies shoot and kill man with knife during San Jose traffic stop

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- A man armed with a knife was shot and killed by Santa Clara County Sheriff's deputies on Monday evening during a traffic stop in San Jose, according to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office says the man was pulled over just after 7:30 p.m. in the area of College Drive and Fruitdale Avenue and started acting erratically, refusing to comply with commands.

They said the man then barricaded himself in the car.

After over two hours of de-escalation attempts, the man exited the car armed with a knife and charged toward deputies.

ABC7 News spoke with Mark Lucas, a neighbor who saw it all unfold.

"He wouldn't come out. Finally, the police, after a few hours, they broke the back windows," Lucas said. "I thought they're going to use like riot gas and maybe try to get him out of the car. Next thing I know, they're yelling, he's got a weapon, and there were three shots fired, and they pulled him out of the car, tried to do CPR."

The man was taken to the hospital, where he died.

The sheriff's office said it used several less-lethal tools and projectiles so that deputies didn't have to use deadly force.

This happened within San Jose city limits so the San Jose Police Department is leading the investigation.

The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office will also be conducting an independent review.
