SAN FRANCISCO -- Muni Metro subway light-rail service in San Francisco was disrupted Wednesday afternoon because of an equipment issue near the Powell station, according to transit officials.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency said it had to repair a overhead wire. SFMTA initially issued an alert at about 2:20 p.m. about the problem involving the equipment on the outbound side of the tracks near the Powell station.
Just before 7:30 p.m., SFMTA announced overhead wire testing was completed, and began to resume subway service in both directions. "We will be making service adjustments to balance out service," the agency tweeted.
Buses took passengers along Market Street between the Market & Steuart and Market & Castro stops, while inbound J-Church and N-Judah light-rail vehicles turned back at Church & Duboce, the M-Ocean View and L-Taraval lines turned around at Castro, and the K-Ingleside line switched back at West Portal, according to the SFMTA.
There was no service between Embarcadero and the Caltrain station for about five hours.
The cause of the equipment problem is unknown.
