Fire breaks out at iconic Mel's Drive-In diner on Lombard St. in SF

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The Mel's Drive-In diner on Lombard Street in San Francisco's Marina District caught fire early Tuesday morning.

Video posted by the San Francisco Fire Department shows crews responding to the scene just after 4 a.m., and smoke coming from the top of the diner.

Lombard Street between Fillmore and Steiner Streets is closed and officials are asking the public to avoid the area.

SFFD says the fire started in the flue area of the kitchen, and crews were working to extinguish.

The owner of Mel's Drive-In talked to ABC7 Eyewitness News, and explained that investigators believe the fire started in the kitchen and spread to the attic.

No one was hurt, but the restaurant sustained significant damage with much of the ceiling above the kitchen appearing to be burned or melted away.

The owner said he wants to reopen the restaurant as soon as possible.

It has been a staple on Lombard Street for 40 years.
