Robert Reich discusses premiere of 'The Last Class' documentary and the impact of wealth inequality

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Former Clinton Labor Secretary and UC Berkeley Professor Emeritus Robert Reich returns to campus this week for the premiere of "The Last Class," a new documentary capturing his final semester teaching his famous class, Wealth and Poverty.

The course, a campus favorite for over a decade, explored the roots of economic inequality in America -- tracing how policy, power, and corporate influence have shaped the widening gap between rich and poor. Reich's lectures often connected historical trends to current events, challenging students to think critically about capitalism, democracy, and civic responsibility.

Directed by Elliot Kirschner, "The Last Class" documents Reich's final months in the classroom, blending lecture footage with behind-the-scenes moments and reflections on his career. The film is both a tribute to teaching and a call to action for a new generation.

In an interview with ABC7 News Anchor Kristen Sze, Reich discussed the government shutdown, the structural forces driving inequality, and whether capitalism can be reformed to serve more Americans. He also reflected on his new memoir, "Coming Up Short," which examines his short stature and distaste for bullies shaped his public life.

"The Last Class" premieres Wednesday at UC Berkeley, followed by a conversation between Reich and political comedian W. Kamau Bell. The event is sold out but you can find showings at theaters nationwide at the film's website.
