'Great Christmas Light Fight' host says season 13 is "more intense"

It's about to get "lit" on ABC with the premiere of "The Great Christmas Light Fight."

The competition show is back with a whole new group of families facing off to see who has the brightest decorations in the land. The winners get $50,000.

"The Great Christmas Light Fight" is in its 13th year and it's hosted and judged by lifestyle expert Carter Oosterhouse and interior designer Taniya Nayak.

"I feel every year for 'The Great Christmas Light Fight,' the people and the competitors, it gets more intense. The style is more on point; people know what they have to do to compete, not just compete but compete and win," Oosterhouse told On The Red Carpet.

"This year is just bigger and better than ever before."

In fact, Oosterhouse said there's a boat in this year's competition!

"We don't always get to be on a boat for Christmas, usually you think it's in somebody's yard. This year I was on a boat and I got to see Christmas, experience Christmas in a whole different light," he said.

So, does judging everyone's over-the-top decorations make Oosterhouse want to step up his light game at his own house?

"My wife wants me to. My family does. But I kinda sit there and say, you know what? I've seen the best of the best. I really have. And I'm just gonna pale in comparison. So what's the point, really," he said with a laugh. "When you see the commitment level that people will go to and the lengths that they will go to it's hard to put up lights at your own house because I'm not that committed."

True, families across the country competition work sometimes for months to get their displays just right for the competition. And when they do, Oosterhouse said it's all about the vibes.

"Every time you walk out and the lights go on for the first time, that's a magical moment because you get to see all the hard work...you get the feelings that go into it that come from their display, you know?," Oosterhouse said. "It's heartfelt, it's meaningful, the neighbors love it, the community really digs it and those are usually the best ones."

Plug into "The Great Christmas Light Fight" when it premieres December 4 on ABC and streams the next day on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.
