
SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, Calif. -- A portion of State Highway 17 in Santa Cruz County reopened early Friday morning, nearly a day after a big-rig overturned on the freeway, north of Scotts Valley.

In a statement on social media around 4:35 a.m. Friday, the California Highway Patrol confirmed the Highway 17's southbound lanes near Sugarloaf Road are again fully accessible by motorists.
On Thursday morning, a fuel tanker overturned against a guardrail, causing a part of the truck to go down a steep embankment in the area. Fuel also spilled on the freeway.

The driver of the truck was injured in the crash, which had prompted authorities to close all southbound lanes and one northbound lane in the area as crews scrambled to clear the scene due to the danger posed by the fuel.
