How to protect yourself against porch pirates

We've seen it happen time after time. A stranger runs onto a porch, snatches a package that was just delivered and takes in mere seconds.

The theft definitely ramps up during the holidays. In fact, one in four Americans has had a package stolen.

Experts say most thefts happen between noon and 6 p.m. - when most people are at work. If you're expecting a package and won't be home, there are several things you can do to avoid becoming a victim of so-called "porch pirates."

Set up delivery alerts so you know exactly when a package is delivered. That way you can ask a neighbor to grab it for you immediately. You could even arrange to have packages delivered to someone else you trust who's home during the day.

If neither of those options are possible, you can have the Postal Service hold your mail until you can stop by to grab it.

There are also things you can buy to help keep your packages safe.

Some people are turning to lock boxes or bins you install on your porch. Delivery drivers simply put the packages in there - and out of the way of potential thieves - until you can bring them safely inside.

Many people also have doorbell cameras to record whatever happens. That way, if you do become a victim, the footage could possibly help authorities catch the suspects.

And it's not just "porch pirates" trying to profit this holiday season. So are cyber-criminals. Some leave a note on your door saying a package could not be delivered. Others send you a text or an email.

In all instances, it's a ploy to get you to release sensitive, personal information.

Even if the notes or emails look legitimate, do not call a phone number or click on a link. Instead, go to the company's actual website and find the official customer service number.
