What to know before booking summer travel amid oil price spike

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- With just months to go until the busy summer travel season, many are worried about how the war in the Middle East could impact the price of their vacation.

Since the conflict with Iran, oil prices have skyrocketed, leading to higher gas prices and higher costs for plane tickets.

"Airlines can't absorb all of that on their own, so they're going to find ways to recoup some portion, a considerable portion, from travelers," said airline analyst Henry Harteveldt.

The cost of a barrel of oil has risen by more than 40 percent in the past two weeks.

Add that to the general uncertainty gripping much of the world, and it's creating a complex picture for people looking to lock in a good price for a summer getaway.

The current geopolitical situation is expected to have an impact on the travel industry, not just in the summer months, but also right now.

That's according to some travel agents in San Francisco's Chinatown.

He says over the past two weeks he has had several customers tell him they're worried about their travel plans, with many unsure of when - and even if - they should plan a vacation.

"People even talk to me about they want to go to Egypt, go to Turkey. They will say I'm going to hold off on this and see what happens," said Siu.

Energy experts say there's no way of telling where oil prices will go from here.

But several believe, at least for now, the price seems only to be going up.

"We don't know how much damage has been done to oil fields and pipelines and shipping facilities. And I don't think we're really going to know until the war is over," said Borenstein.
