Hundreds come out in Oakland to honor MLK Day of Service

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- Many people around the Bay Area are spending Martin Luther King Jr. Day by volunteering in their community.

In Oakland, hundreds came out to the Gardens at Lake Merritt to honor of the civil rights leader as part of the national MLK Day of Service.

Many of the volunteers are participating by cleaning up some of the city's parks and gardens.

"These gardens will be clean and beautiful for people to come and see them," said 9-year-old volunteer Olympia Pagolutos-Chavez.

"There's no dedicated staff to these gardens," explained Tora Rocha, with Oakland's Public Works department. She says the volunteers are vital.
