SF Supervisor Joel Engardio's recall election is on Tuesday

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Voters in San Francisco's Sunset District will decide on Tuesday whether Supervisor Joel Engardio will keep his job.

Engardio is facing a recall over his endorsement of Prop K, a controversial ballot measure that closed a portion of the Great Highway, and replaced it with what's now called Sunset Dunes Park.

"It didn't have to be this way. We actually, at the very beginning, when we as soon as we heard about this, we begged and asked him to reconsider this ballot measure," said Albert Chow, owner of Great Wall Hardware.

Residents of the Sunset District have complained about the closure which they say is sending more traffic into their neighborhoods.

"He turned around and doubled down and went against the majority of people in this area that really care and use the Great Highway and turn it into a park, which we didn't need. But it was a road that we very much found necessary," said Chow.

Despite the pushback from residents, the new park has become one of the most popular since opening in April, according to the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department.

"I'm knocking on doors five, six hours a day because we have to get out the vote. My supporters need to know this is not a November election. This is a Tuesday election," said Supervisor Joel Engardio.

Engardio pleading to his constituents. "For people on the fence. I'm saying, you know, vote no for now because next year, I'm up for election anyway. And you can judge me on all the issues against all the candidates."

Engardio is reminding voters, "Recalling me now. It limits your choice. You cannot choose my replacement."

If Engardio is recalled, voters would not be able to choose his replacement.

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie would handpick the next supervisor.

If Engardio is not recalled, his current term ends in 2026, and is up for reelection.
