Jury deliberations begin in trial of ex-Illinois officer who killed Sonya Massey

PEORIA, Ill. -- Jury deliberations are underway Tuesday in the murder trial of former Sangamon County, Illinois, sheriff's Deputy Sean Grayson.

Closing arguments also took place Tuesday morning.

Grayson took the stand Monday.

Grayson was questioned about his version of events the night he shot and killed Sonya Massey inside her Springfield area home.

Grayson told the court he fired when Massey raised her hands, he says, to throw a pot of hot water at him.

The moment he described is not captured on body camera footage.

Grayson, 31, has pleaded not guilty. If convicted of murder, he faces 45 years to life in prison. Prosecutors dismissed single counts of aggravated battery with a firearm and official misconduct.
