Shonda Rhimes and Meg Marinis honor the legacies of Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman

LOS ANGELES -- A major era at Grey Sloan Memorial is coming to an end.
ABC has confirmed that longtime series regulars Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver will depart "Grey's Anatomy" following the Season 22 finale.
McKidd, who joined the cast in Season 5 in 2008 as trauma surgeon Owen Hunt, has been an anchor of the series for 18 seasons and directed 48 episodes. Raver, who first appeared as cardiothoracic surgeon Teddy Altman in Season 6 in 2009, leaves after 12 seasons.
Both actors became staples of the "Grey's" family, with Raver also stepping behind the camera to direct starting in Season 19. Series creator Shonda Rhimes said in a statement that the exit is designed to give the pair an honorable end to their story.
"Over the years, we have had the privilege of watching Owen and Teddy's love story evolve and deepen - two characters who always seem to find their way back to each other," Rhimes said. "It is both bittersweet and joyful to give this couple the happy ending their story deserves."
Showrunner Meg Marinis praised the duo for their work, noting that McKidd helped shape the "emotional foundation" of the show.
"While their story is coming to a close, this is never truly a goodbye," Marinis said. "We are endlessly grateful for the years, the artistry and the memories they've given to the show."
McKidd called the show a "huge chapter" of his life, expressing gratitude to Rhimes for the opportunity to both act and direct. Raver echoed that statement, stating, "Playing Dr. Teddy Altman will always hold a dear and special place in my heart. To the fans - your unwavering devotion and support are the reason this show remains such a force."
