NOVATO, Calif. (KGO) -- The California Transportation Commission has approved a plan to prevent Highway 37, one of the main routes into Wine Country, from sinking.

On Friday, the commission voted in favor of a $100 million modernization project for Highway 37 in Marin, Sonoma, Napa and Solano counties.

North Bay communities are preparing early as experts are warning that California could be headed toward a potentially historic El Niño winter.

Supporters of the plan said aging infrastructure is contributing to traffic backups throughout the corridor. However, flooding and rising sea levels have emerged as the biggest concerns for the highway.

The improvements are expected to pave the way for a larger $190 million project that includes bridge repairs and the eventual replacement of the most flood-prone section of Highway 37.

The project is designed to address long-term infrastructure challenges along the corridor as transportation officials continue planning future upgrades.
