Kilauea, a volcano in Hawaii, started erupting Tuesday morning, spewing football-sized particles into the air, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said the eruption at Halemaumau began at 9:17 a.m.
The large volcanic pieces have been reported at overlooks in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.
There is concern that an incoming storm could send ash onto homes near the volcano.
Kilauea is one of the world's most active volcanoes, located on the island of Hawaii.
