San Jose officer injured, armed carjacking suspect dead following shootout, chase: authorities

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- A carjacking suspect was killed Wednesday, and a SJPD sergeant was injured after a chase that spanned several South Bay cities ended in a shootout in San Jose, according to authorities.

Cellphone video obtained by ABC7 News shows a chaotic scene in downtown San Jose Wednesday afternoon as the series of events came to an end.

Police say this all started in San Jose around 3 p.m. when the suspect stole a vehicle from a dealership and drove south to Hollister.

Officers there followed him along with the San Benito County Sheriff's Office, and there were two separate shootouts. Hollister police say none of their officers were hurt.

Authorities say the suspect then carjacked another vehicle and headed back to San Jose.

It all came to an end right next to Highway 87 near Notre Dame Avenue, where West St. James turns into Julian Street.

SJPD says that's where the suspect attempted to steal a squad car but then ran away as officers opened fire. Police say the suspect was then run over by a squad car, but would not confirm how he died.

San Jose police say the sergeant injured in the shootout does not have life-threatening injuries and is expected to survive.

Authorities did not identify the suspect, only stating that he was an adult male.

Highway 87 and several streets in the area where the shootout happened remain closed.

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan posted on X saying he was able to visit with the officer when he got to the hospital and told his family that his thoughts are with them.

The San Jose Police Officers Association President Steve Slack released a statement in response to the shooting:

"The incredible bravery exhibited by every officer, especially the SJPD Sgt. who was shot and hospitalized after confronting the dangerous criminal, was on full display yesterday. Clearly this criminal had no regard for anyone's life and endangered hundreds of innocent people during his multiple county crime spree. Our officers displayed courage as they ran toward gunfire and ultimately eliminated the threat. The injured Sgt. is in good spirits and we are supporting him and his family in every way we can."
