Man arrested after allegedly leaving propane barbecue unattended, sparking Foster City fire: police

FOSTER CITY, Calif. (KGO) -- A man has been arrested after allegedly leaving a propane barbecue unattended, which sparked the devastating 6-alarm Foster City fire that injured firefighters and left more than 50 families displaced on Sunday, according to police.

The suspect was taken into custody after an investigation determined that he had allegedly left the barbecue unattended on his first-floor patio.

Officials say that sparked the blaze, which quickly spread throughout the building on Sea Spray Lane, which didn't have a sprinkler system.

The ABC7 Eyewitness data team learned the building was built in 1981 before sprinklers were legally required.

The fire resulted in injuries to multiple firefighters and has left more than 50 families without a home.

The man is now facing multiple charges, including unlawfully causing a fire resulting in injury to firefighters, obstructing, delaying a police investigation, and willfully resisting, obstructing or delaying a fire investigation.

The building remains strictly off-limits to everyone, including residents hoping to retrieve their personal belongings.

Emergency crews warn that there is still a very real danger of a total building collapse.

Firefighters will continue to perform periodic site checks in the area to monitor for hidden hotspots and prevent the fire from rekindling.

To assist the dozens of residents forced out of their homes, the American Red Cross is opening a dedicated assistance center to help those who are displaced.
