Man, dog shot near SF mall, police officer also injured: authorities

SAN FRANCISCO -- Police in San Francisco shot and injured a man with an aggressive dog on Sunday afternoon, the department said.

Just before 4:30 p.m., officers were flagged down in the area of Market and O'Farrell streets by someone who said a large off-leash dog bit them and was continuing to show aggression to others.

Police found the dog and its owner and a shooting occurred.

According to the department, officers were attempting to detain the subject and secure the dog, before the shooting occurred.

The department did not give any more information about the shooting except to say that the man who was shot was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.

The dog fled from the area and then came back and bit an officer, according to police. Animal control arrived and took the dog. The officer was treated at the scene.

The first dog-bite victim took themselves to the hospital, according to police.

The shooting is being investigated by the District Attorney's Office, SFPD Internal Affairs, and the Department of Police Accountability. If the man who was shot was unarmed, the shooting may be investigated by the California Department of Justice as well.

The Police Department will hold a town hall about the shooting within ten days.
