Mark's Hot Dogs in SJ struggling after multiple break-ins this year

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- Mark's Hot Dogs joins a growing list of San Jose favorites that have faced recent thefts and break-ins at their small businesses.

Owners say it's getting harder and harder to keep rebuilding and reopening.

Mark's Hot Dogs has been in business since 1936 -- nearly 90 years of serving eastside San Jose.

But owner Mark McClain says a rash of burglaries is making it hard to keep the doors open.

"It's just really putting a strain on the business," McClain said. "We did modify hours to keep the employees and everybody safe, but it's the only thing we could come up with at this time to help everything and keep Mark's Hot Dogs open."

Video captured the fifth time this year that Mark's has been broken into or vandalized.

Despite the issues, the parking lot off of Capitol Expressway was still busy. But regulars say crime in the area has become a serious problem.

"Right down the street, we've been having a lot of car break-ins where we live at," Dean Williams said. "We should have a better police monitoring of this area."

"I don't know why we're having all these hits at these restaurants," McClain said. "It feels like we're not the only one that's been hit."

It's true. Mark's Hot Dogs isn't the only San Jose staple dealing with burglary issues.

It's a trend that San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan calls concerning.

"The fact that these criminal rings are targeting small business owners, local entrepreneurs and some of our most beloved local businesses and families that we support and care about is just infuriating," Mahan said.

Mahan said San Jose must do its part to hold repeat offenders accountable to keep businesses like Mark's Hot Dogs from closing for good.

"It would be a real disappointment, because there's a lot of places that are closing, and this is the only place that you can get great food and great service," Williams said. "And you don't have that anymore."

McClain said he want to remain open for the next generation. But he's calling on the city to support his and other small businesses, so owners aren't forced to make a decision they don't want to make.
