Several people were rushed to a hospital following what officials said appeared to be an explosion on a boat off Miami on Saturday afternoon.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said in a statement released on Sunday that officers "responded to a single-vessel boating incident in Miami-Dade County."

"Preliminary information indicates a charter vessel carrying several passengers was in Biscayne Bay, near the Haulover Sandbar, when an explosion occurred on board," the commission said.

"Passengers aboard the vessel were injured, and several were transported to area hospitals for treatment," it added.

"This is an active investigation. No additional information is available at this time. A full report will be available through a public records request once the investigation is complete," the statement said.

First responders rushed to Haulover Sandbar following calls of an explosion around 12:48 p.m. on Saturday, according to Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue.

They found multiple victims. Fire officials initially said 15 people were immediately transported to the hospital. Later in the afternoon, fire officials said that 11 people were hospitalized.

Their conditions were not immediately revealed.
