MILPITAS, Calif. -- A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of the fatal stabbing of another teenage boy in Milpitas on Tuesday afternoon, according to police.
Officers responded around 3:50 p.m. to reports of a fight involving multiple juveniles on Vienna Drive near Milpitas High School and arrived to find a 17-year-old boy suffering from stab wounds, Milpitas police said.
The boy was taken to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries there, and his name has not been released. A second victim, a 16-year-old girl, who ABC7 Eyewitness News was told was the victim's girlfriend, also suffered injuries and was treated at a hospital before being released, according to police.
The 17-year-old suspected of the fatal stabbing remained at the scene and was taken into custody without incident. He was booked into juvenile hall on suspicion of homicide and assault with a deadly weapon, police said.
Wednesday, family and friends left flowers, candles and heartfelt messages at the memorial for 17-year-old Jarred Cavan, who was fatally stabbed.
A woman who said she is Cavan's aunt said he was family-oriented.
"He liked to be around his cousins, his friends," his aunt, Joanna Cavan said. "He stayed out of trouble for a while now. Really, really good kid. He was ready to graduate in June."
"This is an isolated incident," said Milpitas Police Officer Itzel Padilla. "It happened after school hours, off school campus. This definitely does not happen often in the city of Milpitas so it's definitely unfortunate and very sad for not just the family, but I think the whole community and the department itself."
A man who said he is the victim's great uncle said Jarred Cavan was kind, friendly and had plans to go to college.
"It's hard for me, It's hard for me," said Alberto Balili. "I couldn't even concentrate on my work because I couldn't stop thinking about."
