LOS ANGELES -- Mattel brings La Llorona back to life as part of this year's Barbie Día de los Muertos collection.
La Llorona, or "Weeping Woman" in English, is a Mexican ghost story where she drowns her children in a river out of rage and from regret takes her own life. According to legend, her spirit continues to haunt Mexico looking for her children and drowns and kidnaps other kids.
La Llorona doll is illustrated in a way that beautifully captivates Mexican folklore, instead of the terrifying myth told to children warning them to stay away from bodies of water at night.
Designed by Javi Meabe, the doll wears a tiered white gown with blue undertones, draped in a white lace veil with a black rose headdress stationed on top of blue waterlike tears.
The doll's cosmetics mirror traditional Catrina style makeup with tears sculpting her face and has sleeves that envelope her translucent blue hands and long dark nails highlighting her skeletal composure while clutching a lit candle.
La Llorona doll joins Mattel's 2025 Día de los Muertos Barbie and Ken dollsrevealed earlier this year, continuing the company's tribute to Mexican traditions and folklore.
The doll is being sold exclusively to Barbie Club 59 members.
