Welcome to 2026 ESPN NFL Survivor! The rules are simple: Pick one NFL team each week to win its game. If that team wins (or ties), you advance to the next week. If that team loses, you are out. Survive all 18 weeks and you can take home a share of the $25,000 grand prize. The catch is that each team can be chosen only once.

While the rules are simple, the game theory is not. Depending on the size of your group or what platform you play on, the optimal selections could change drastically. Smaller groups will likely end well before Week 18, so optimizing win probability each week is paramount. However, the larger the group, the more you need to focus on saving strong teams for later. ESPN's game requires just one team each week, so that will be the strategic focus of this column, though we will touch on the big contests at Circa and Splash Sports.

For the second straight week, the most-selected team in ESPN Survivor lost as an 8.5-point favorite. In Week 1, the Chargers knocked out 21% of entries, falling to the Cardinals. In Week 2, it was the Buccaneers' turn, blowing a 10-point lead at home against the Cleveland Browns to eliminate 27% of the field. That wasn't the only Week 2 upset, as the Chargers lost again as 6.5-point favorites, while the Baltimore Ravens were stunned by the New Orleans Saints as 8.5-point favorites.

As a result, 68% of the original entries are already out just two weeks into the season. The Chargers are responsible for 33% of those eliminations, while the Buccaneers are responsible for another 23%.

This week, the major decision concerns the Kansas City Chiefs, who are going to be the most-selected team so far (currently 35%). Even though they are on the road, they are the largest betting favorites as they face the Miami Dolphins. Plus, they are widely available, having been used by only 9% of entries.

The second-biggest favorites are the San Francisco 49ers, who are available to only 59% of the ESPN Survivor field after hammering Miami last week. They are the only other team besides the Chiefs laying more than a touchdown, but with three of their next five games coming against theWashington Commanders, Atlanta Falconsand Ravens, they will be a staple of this column.

I was planning on making the New York Giants my top choice on Monday morning, but after injuries to Jaxson Dart and others on Monday night, they are a much more difficult click. The Green Bay Packers also were going to be one of my top picks before Sunday's games, but they looked sluggish in an overtime win against the New York Jets and picked up more injuries. The Philadelphia Eagles are a consideration if Case Keenum starts for the Chicago Bears, but they have less win equity than other teams while having strong future value, so I will pass. And as bad as the Pittsburgh Steelers offense has looked, I am not ready to fade them as a divisional home underdog against the Cincinnati Bengals.

For contests that require multiple picks this week, the Carolina Panthers are a fun but risky pick. Despite last week's win, the Browns still grade out as the third-worst team in the NFL according to ESPN Analytics, and the Panthers aren't projected to be more than a 54% favorite again until Week 18 according to our two models.

All that said, my top two picks for ESPN will be the two biggest favorites, the 49ers and the Chiefs.

Note: Odds by DraftKings and subject to change. Future value based on Mike Clay's cheat sheet.

The Road to 18-0

1. San Francisco 49ers (vs. Cardinals)

If you still have the 49ers available, the best question is when to deploy them. Considering that both our models have this as the most-lopsided game this week and the easiest game remaining for the 49ers, and they will likely be less than 10% owned, this is as good a week as any. They are a stronger pick in ESPN and Circa than they are in the two main Splash contests.

  • Chance to win: 89% (ESPN Analytics), 91% (Mike Clay)

  • Spread: 49ers -8.5 (-485 moneyline)

  • Future value: Fourth

  • ESPN Selection: 7%

2. Kansas City Chiefs (at Dolphins)

The Chiefs will be the heavy chalk, but deservingly so as they are the biggest betting favorites while also having less future value than any of the other big favorites. Plus, for those of you in contests that have double-pick weeks, most of the Chiefs' hardest matchups fall in those slots, making them even less valuable down the road. They will likely be my most-selected team on both major Splash contests.

  • Chance to win: 84% (ESPN Analytics), 87% (Mike Clay)

  • Spread: Chiefs -11.5 (-850 moneyline)

  • Future value: Ninth

  • ESPN Selection: 35%

3. Detroit Lions (vs. Jets)

Out of the three teams favored by around a touchdown, I lean towards the Lions, especially on ESPN. While the Lions have eight games after this week where our models have them as at least a 60% favorite right now, they don't have the high-end ceiling of theSeattle Seahawks and Buffalo Billswith no games higher than a 79% win probability. Detroit is a very valuable team to hold on Splash, since most of their easiest games fall in double-pick weeks, but if you've burned the 49ers already and want to fade the Chiefs, the Lions are a fine pivot.

  • Chance to win: 75% (ESPN Analytics), 75% (Mike Clay)

  • Spread: Lions -6.5 (-305 moneyline)

  • Future value: Eighth

  • ESPN Selection: 10%

4. New Orleans Saints (vs. Raiders)

Finally, a riskier pick for those of you who truly like to hoard the elite teams. The Saints are under 2% selected right now, and with so many other teams trending higher, they will likely remain low. New Orleans' remaining schedule is one of the easiest, but the Saints are ranked only 17th by ESPN Analytics, which is not the type of team you are obligated to save. Both of our models are higher on the Saints than the betting market, so they are a fine contrarian pick with risk.

  • Chance to win: 65% (ESPN Analytics), 71% (Mike Clay)

  • Spread: Saints -3 (-185 moneyline)

  • Future value: 15th

  • ESPN Selection: 2%

5. Green Bay Packers (vs. Falcons)

It's a tough spot for the Packers, coming off an overtime game on Sunday with a game on Thursday. Teams in that spot are 13-37 all-time. Combine that with injuries to Zach Bako-Bewele and Jayden Reed, while the Falcons get back Michael Penix Jr., and it makes sense Atlanta is taking money. But our models like the Packers more than the betting market does. And out of all the teams favored by four-plus points, no team has a harder schedule than the Packers, despite a Week 15 home games against Miami. Ultimately, their ownership keeps them this low on the list. While I expect them to come in lower than 14%, there are too many other options to take on the risk.

  • Chance to win: 74% (ESPN Analytics), 79% (Mike Clay)

  • Spread: Packers -5.5 (-265 moneyline)

  • Future value: 14th

  • ESPN Selection: 14%

6. Carolina Panthers (at Browns)

The Panthers have too little of a win probability for me to trust them on ESPN, which is why they are ranked this low, but in contests with double-pick weeks this early, they are firmly in play. To survive the season undefeated in the Big Splash, you will use 26 teams, meaning that eventually you have to take some mediocre teams against bad teams. Despite last week's upset win, the Browns are still one of the three worst teams in the NFL. ESPN Analytics' model is high on the Panthers compared to the betting market, and with Carolina having little future value, this is a spot to gain leverage.

  • Chance to win: 63% (ESPN Analytics), 54% (Mike Clay)

  • Spread: Panthers -2.5 (-148 moneyline)

  • Future value: 28th

  • ESPN Selection: 6%
