OAKLAND, Calif. -- Multiple people were displaced Tuesday night after a fire broke out in a large Oakland apartment complex, the fire department said.

When firefighters arrived, smoke and flames were visible from an upper unit where people were trapped inside, Sanders said.

A second alarm was called as crews attempted to move hoses to the upper areas of the complex. The fire originated in one unit and then spread to the one above it, affecting a total of four units. In all residents of up to 12 units in the building were displaced due to smoke and fire damage, Sanders said.

No one was injured but a cat died in the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
