Outside Lands kicks off at Golden Gate Park

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Outside Lands -- the largest independently owned and operated music festival in the U.S. -- is now underway.

The three-day event features more than 100 artists, as well as what promoters are calling a "second-to-none" food and beverage program.

On one side of Fulton Street, over 225,000 music lovers are expected at Golden Gate Park over the weekend. On the other side, many neighbors who live in the Richmond District are welcoming the noise like an old friend.

"I wish I could make it out better, so I can hear whose performing," said Crinan Dunbar, who went to the music festival last year.

Marc Cunney has lived in the neighborhood for 25 years. Over the years, some of his children have attended.

"This is definitely home of the pre-game," Cunney said. "I don't go, but I can listen from the back deck, which is great."

This year, more than 110 artists are performing across eight stages spread out in Golden Gate Park.

Sam and Liz Romero from Modesto are ecstatic to be in VIP.

"I'm a really big fan of alternative music, so this is my year," said the older Romero sister.

"Golden Gate Park can't be beat," said Ben Dreyer, who is on his sixth year of attending.

"You're in the middle of the forest, which feels really fun," said Nicole Chiuccariello.

Of the more than 95 local food and drink vendors, 85% of them are women and people of color.

There is even a re-creation of city hall, where festivalgoers can book their weddings.

"We just got married at Outside Lands!" said Inakahy Majumder, showing off her new ring after marrying Alex Morgan.

"I'm feeling amazing. I'm finally married to the love of my life," said Morgan, who added that the two have been coming to Outside Land for a few years. "It's special to us."

One man said it was the best day of his life.

"I've been waiting for years and years to get a three-day pass," said Aaron, who didn't share his last name. "For the first time in my life, I had enough money. This is a dream come true!"
