Passenger dies after driver crashes into parked car while fleeing San Leandro traffic stop: police

SAN LEANDRO, Calif. -- A passenger in an SUV that allegedly fled from an attempted traffic stop in San Leandro was killed Saturday night after the SUV's driver collided with a parked vehicle.

The driver and another passenger were hospitalized after the wreck, which occurred at about 11:17 p.m.

The three were in a white Infinity SUV that allegedly fled from the scene at the intersection of East 14th Street and Bancroft Avenue when officers on the Regional Sideshow Enforcement Team tried to stop the SUV for multiple alleged vehicle code violations, according to a statement from the San Leandro Police Department on Sunday.

The sergeant involved in the initial enforcement stop allegedly turned off his patrol lights and siren and did not pursue the vehicle, according to the police department's statement.

The SUV was being monitored by an Alameda County Sheriff's Office helicopter when it allegedly crashed into an unoccupied parked vehicle in the 13800 block of Bancroft Avenue.

The front passenger was declared dead from their injuries, while the driver was hospitalized in critical condition, and a rear passenger was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries.

The San Leandro Police Department is investigating the traffic violations involved before the wreck, including investigating the driver for suspected driving under the influence. The California Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the fatal collision.
