New details are emerging about the person who was shot and killed Friday morning in East Oakland.

Oakland police said officers responded to a shooting and found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

"When officers arrived on scene they located two victims with gunshots wounds. One was transported to a local hospital and is in stable condition. Officers attempted lifesaving measures on the second victim. Paramedics also arrived tragically that victim succumbed to her injuries," Oakland Police Chief James Beere said.

The victim was a 25-year-old student at the Oakland Adult and Career Education Resource Center in East Oakland who was enrolled in a summer program.

According to family members, she was scheduled to graduate on Friday.

"She was supposed to graduate today and it's sad that we get to this point where there is so much violence. It is so much violence. When you take a life, it can never be replaced but whatever you are arguing about and disappointed about it can be replaced," said Brittia Johnson, the victim's aunt.

Instead of celebrating her graduation, the family is now mourning her death.

"She was a quiet young lady. She kept to herself and she had just turned her life around. Finished her program with the city," Johnson said.

The shooting prompted a lockdown at the school, according to the Oakland Unified School District.

"This is something that should never have happened here or anywhere else. When this happened we the district and the school locked everything and made sure everyone else was safely in classrooms or in the office," OUSD spokesperson John Sasaki said.

Residents described hearing gunfire and seeing a large emergency response in the neighborhood.

"I saw a lot of police cars and a lot of sirens. There were two ambulances and I was just filming on the citizen app and there is an outdoor classroom and there were a lot of police going thee and EMT's and they pulled out a stretcher, and they put a yellow tarp on it," said resident Heidi Kelly-Tuason.

Kelly-Tuason said she heard multiple gunshots.

"Multiple. It seems like there were multiple guns because the sounds were different," she said.

Video from SKY7 showed approximately two dozen evidence markers in a parking lot behind the building, possibly indicating locations where investigators found bullet casings.

Police said the shooting was not a random act. Family members suggested gang violence may have played a role, though police have not publicly identified a motive. Investigators said they are making progress in the case.

"Investigators have a lot of information, and we are utilizing technology and there are definitely people who have stepped up, and we are confident we will be able to determine the reason and the people responsible," Beere said.
