REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- A man who allegedly pointed a gun at officers in Redwood City on Tuesday was shot and killed by police, according to the department.
Just after 2:30 p.m., a 911 call came in reporting that a man had fired a gun into the sidewalk in the 200 block of Hazel Avenue before fleeing on foot.
Officers arrived and established a perimeter to try and contain the suspect, who was located via drone nearby.
According to police, a team equipped with both lethal and less-lethal options was formed and approached the suspect, Redwood City resident Jose Reynaldo Lombera, 48.
As officers attempted to communicate with Lombera, they allege he pulled a gun out and pointed it toward them.
"Less lethal and lethal munitions were fired," said the department. "The suspect was struck, subdued, and immediately provided medical aid by officers at the scene."
Police said Lombera was taken to a hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds but died as a result of his injuries.
According to the Redwood City Police Department, the officers directly involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave. The San Mateo County District Attorney's Office will be the lead investigative agency into the shooting.
The department said more information will be released as it becomes available.
