SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A boy was injured in a shooting at Phillip and Sala Burton Academic High School in San Francisco on Tuesday and another boy has been taken into custody on suspicion of shooting him, police said.
The shooting was reported at 12:13 p.m. at the school on Mansell Street in the city's Portola District. Officers arrived and found a boy suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive his injuries, San Francisco police said.
Supervisor Jackie Fielder, whose district includes the Portola neighborhood, said the student was shot in the leg.
"Kids were starting to go to lunch and then the cops started pulling up because a kid was shot in the leg," described one of the students and added, "they made an announcement letting us. Teachers were all screaming and panicking."
The school was on lockdown for about an hour, according to a student who described their classmates running back inside the main building where teachers locked their classrooms.
Luz Peña : "What went through your mind after hearing that one of your classmates was shot?"
"I was low key feeling bad for him, and I don't know why we are still going to school because someone's life was in danger. I think people are also scared they don't even want to go to school either," said Johnny Zeng, a senior student at Burton High School.
The shooting suspect fled but authorities were able to find him in the 1400 block of Shafter Avenue in the Bayview District and took him into custody while also recovering a firearm, police said.
"I want to thank our officers for their work in this case and for quickly taking the suspect into custody. I also want to ensure to the public that this was an isolated incident," said Captain Bernadette Robinson of the SFPD Bayview station.
More information about the shooting was not immediately available from police or San Francisco Unified School District officials.
Fielder said in a statement, "I am deeply grateful for the quick response and actions of SFPD, Burton staff, and teachers to secure the premises. Every child deserves to feel safe at school and in their communities. We can never accept senseless violence that disrupts any student's wellbeing and pursuit of their education."
The Unified School District confirmed classes continued after the shooting.
"We are really thankful that our student is recovering in the hospital right now. SFPD responded immediately and our staff followed protocol immediately. Our school closed all our parameters and did not allow students to enter or leave the premises. We notified families via text message and followed with an email with more information," said Maria Su, SFUSD Superintendent.
The San Francisco Unified School District has not confirmed if the suspect is a student at the school. SFPD said there is not threat to the general public or other students.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the SFPD tip line at (415) 575-4444 or to send a tip by text message to TIP411 with SFPD at the start of the message.
