SFO's Terminal 1 reopens after suspicious package investigation

SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT -- Harvey Milk Terminal 1 at San Francisco International Airport was evacuated for about two hours Friday because of a "suspicious package," police said.

The terminal, which primarily handles domestic flights, was cleared about 8:15 a.m. for an investigation involving the San Francisco Police Department's Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit, which handles bombs, hazardous materials and dangerous devices.

The terminal reopened about 10:30 a.m. when officers deemed the package safe, police said.

Passengers were directed to check-in inside the International Terminal then walk to their gates after passing through security.

SFO officials said all ticket counters reopened inside Terminal 1 but urged passengers to arrive early as roadways remained congested.
