California voters approve Prop 50

Voters in California have approved Proposition 50, a ballot proposal to adopt a new congressional map that redraws five districts to be more Democratic-leaning, ABC News projects.

Championed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom, the ballot initiative intends to offset the effects of President Donald Trump's efforts in Texas to add five Republican-held seats to Congress as Republicans seek to maintain their control of the U.S. House ahead of the 2026 midterm election.

How the Golden State votes will likely impact which party retains control of Congress in 2026 and how Californians are represented in the nation's capital.

Tens of millions of dollars were poured into the contest from both sides of the aisle, as Newsom aimed to frame the battle as a fight to save democracy from Trump and Republicans aim to depict it as a power grab from Democrats.

Speaking to reporters in Sacramento, Newsom cast the California vote as part of a broader national rejection of Trump's policies that saw Democratic governors elevated in New Jersey and Virginia. But he warned the more consequential battle would come next year.

If Democrats win the House majority, they can "end Donald Trump's presidency as we know it," Newsom said. "It is all on the line, a bright line, in 2026."

"I think that the voters put these propositions in place - one for the state legislatives lines, one for congress - because they were really sick and tired of politics as usual," said Justin Levitt, professor at Loyola Law School. "This Prop. 50 supersedes the lines for Congress for a couple years, but it doesn't undo the commission, it doesn't undo anything about the commission for the state legislature, and I think voters were really careful about both of those things going into this election."
