2-headed snake born at Bay Area pet store has died

BERKELEY, Calif. (KGO) -- A rare two-headed snake born at a Berkeley, California, pet store has died.

East Bay Vivarium says "Angel" and "Zeke" died one week ago, just one day before their first birthday.

They were California kingsnakes and their birth was a one in 100,000 occurrence.

The store owner had a cautious optimism about the snake's future.

Angel and Zeke had a visible bump where their spine forked.

According to the SF Chronicle, workers worried the subdominant snake might choke if it tried to eat.

The snake grew to more than 18 inches in its life.
